Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)

In collaboration with the Graduate School, the Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy coordinates UM instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR).

RCR education is required for UM affiliates who are involved in research and supported by NIH or NSF funds. It is also required by some UM colleges/schools and departments for all affiliates who may be involved in research, regardless of their funding source(s).

The NIH requires documentation of an institutional RCR commitment, and makes RCR a requirement for Career Development Awards (K awards) and training grants. RCR activities are obligatory throughout the careers of students and postdocs.

The NSF requires an RCR plan before funding is provided.
